Insect Bug Screens for Windows
Insect bug screens are window screens specifically designed to keep unwanted flying insects out while still allowing fresh air to circulate indoors. These screens are especially useful during cooler months when windows are frequently opened to enjoy a pleasant breeze. However, in the summer here in Texas, we often refrain from opening windows because the outdoor temperatures are too high.
Benefits of Insect Bug Screens for Windows
Pest Control: Bug screens are effective at preventing flying insects, such as mosquitoes, flies, wasps, yellow jackets, and beetles, from entering your home. However, they cannot keep crawling bugs out, as these insects can easily maneuver around the screen frame. To prevent crawling bugs from entering through an open window, you would need to seal the area where the window screen meets the window frame with a sealant like silicone. Keep in mind that this sealing method would make it difficult to remove the screens when needed. We do not offer this service, nor do we recommend it.
Improved Airflow: Bug screens provide ventilation while maintaining indoor comfort, making them perfect for cooler weather. In Texas, residents typically open their windows only during the cooler months. The heat in Texas for most of the year is so intense that people usually do not leave their windows open.
Natural Light: Screens enable natural light to enter while keeping flying bugs at bay, enhancing the ambiance of your living spaces.
Sturdiness of Insect Bug Screens
Pool & Patio Strong Fabric: A few years ago, I became frustrated with my bug screens getting torn during transportation and handling. The main issue was the sharp mitered corners of the screens, which would tear the fiber wire bug fabric used in the screens. We manufacture outdoor patio screens for wood patio enclosures. While we do not build the wood enclosures, we do create and install the screens for them. Since these screens are generally large and prone to damage, we opted to use a PVC-coated bug screen fabric called Pool & Patio. This fabric is significantly stronger than the inexpensive basic fiber wire fabric that is commonly used. Although it costs a bit more, the difference in strength is remarkable. I started using the Pool & Patio fabric for my bug screens several years ago and have never looked back. This fabric results in much longer-lasting and stronger window screens.
Heavy Duty Framing: At JoshHobbs.com we primarily use heavy duty 1" framing. The same heavy duty framing that we use to make our large solar window screens out of. To my knowledge, I am the only installer in the Austin, TX area who uses 1-inch solar screen framing to construct my insect bug screens. In contrast, the traditional 3/4-inch framing used by nearly all other installers, including 99% of window manufacturers, is quite flimsy. It can easily bend when removing the bug screens. If you have a window with a stretch of framing that exceeds 40 inches, you can be guaranteed that this weak 3/4-inch framing will bow, preventing the screen from seating properly within the window. My 1-inch heavy-duty solar screen framing, however, will not bend or bow. It is very strong, so you won’t have to worry about damaging the framing when you take the screen in and out of your window.
Size and Types of Insect Bug Screens for different windows
Single Hung windows: Single hung windows are the traditional builder's grade windows, representing 99.5% of the windows installed in homes during construction. The term "single hung" means that the window opens from one side; either the bottom section opens or it's a horizontal sliding window with one side that opens. My pricing of $30 for bug screens applies to single hung windows of any size.
Double Hung windows: These windows are typically aftermarket installations, often used to replace original builder-grade windows. Double hung windows are more common in Northern climates but can occasionally be found in other areas as well. They feature two movable sashes, allowing you to open either the top or bottom section one at a time. One challenge with double hung windows is that they require specialized screens, as double hung manufacturers use proprietary framing sizes, corner designs, and spring mechanisms. Due to these complications, I rarely take on projects involving double hung windows, as sourcing the necessary materials can be difficult. However, I encourage homeowners to reach out and discuss their specific situation with me. To make an informed decision about taking on a project, I will need the homeowner to provide pictures of the windows.
