We make our Roller Shade Screens to provide shade for your Patio, or for Commercial Buildings where you need to shade the windows from the inside. When installed for commercial building use, our commercial grade roller shades (business window shades) are installed on the inside of the windows. For a patio, our manual exterior roller shades are installed anywhere we can to provide maximum shade for your patio and ease to roll them up and down. Roll up shade screens are an ideal option for patio sun shade, as our exterior patio roll up sun shades can easily be manually rolled up and down for when needed. All of our exterior sun shades for patios and interior commercial window shades we make here locally at our shop and are made out of our heavy duty solar screen fabric. Our exterior porch shades are built to last.
The above retractable roller shade pricing is based on a Total Quantity. If you are looking for three installed retractable roller sun shades of any size, then the pricing column you would use to get that pricing is the Installed Qty 2-3 column. The pricing is based on "up to the next size" up to widths, meaning if you require pricing for a 100" solar shade, you will use the 108" row pricing. All our retractable solar roll shades are made with the same maximum height of 85". These prices include a measure and installation trip. The first column is our DIY Self Install Qty 1 Pricing for our retractable roller sun shades. You can click on the link that reads Self-Install to be taken to the order system where you will order these and to see what larger quantity pricing will look like, or you can follow this link to be taken to our DIY (self-install) Roller Shade website.

Question : I see that your retractable patio shade screens are manually operated (roll up and down by chain), do you also do motorized roll shades that operate by a motor, by remote control? & Answer : In large commercial applications, yes, but for residential homes, no. Currently, the only Austin porch shades installation service I offer for residential properties is for my manual roll down patio shades. I can install my exterior patio shades for a fraction of what the motorized roll down shades run as an installed cost. For example, I can install a manual 10' +/- roll down exterior sun shade with an accompanying solar window screen order for around $300, versus a 10' motorized, zipper-tracked, roll down patio shade for around $2500. Granted, the zipper-track patio roll up sun shades system is very high-end, but for a fraction of the cost I can give you the same amount of shade. A huge considerable factor to think about when considering manual verses motorized is maintenance (things that can go wrong / break). With manual outdoor shades, once they are and installed they will work and work and work. Whereby with a motorized porch shade, you have to contend with motor problems, and remote issues, losing the remote, the remote loosing it's programming and on and on. And, you for sure wouldn't want a motorized exterior patio shade that operates off of batteries, even if they are the solar powered variety. That's a whole another set of maintenance problems. For me, the goal is simplicity and longevity. You want your patio solar shades to be close to zero maintenance and last, which our manual outdoor roller shades fit that bill perfectly.
Question : Can I cover my windows with outdoor roller shades instead of using your solar window screens? Can you mount your roll up solar shades on the outside of my windows? & Answer :This is not a practice I recommend, as you do not want to mount anything that can blow around in the wind close or near your glass. All of our Austin outdoor shades that roll up and down have a heavy aluminum bottom hem bar to weight them down and you don't want to worry about that blowing around and hitting, thus breaking, your window's glass. So yes, while you can physically install them over windows, I don't offer this as an installation service. If you would like to install outdoor roller shades over your window(s) yourself, you can purchase them to put on yourself as a DIY project through our HobbsScreens.com website.
Question : Can I use patio exterior solar shades for the inside of my Residential Windows instead of blinds? Can I replace my blinds with your roll shade screens? Can I use your retractable solar shades for Patio Privacy? & Answer : You can, but roller shades will not give evening privacy. To prove this point for a government project I did, there were multiple companies bidding the same job that ALL assured the purchaser that the densest available fabric out there, the 99% fabric, would provide evening privacy. I assured the purchaser that these bidders were all incorrect. So, to prove my point, I produced the following pictures. As you can see, you can still see through this 99% fabric at night (right-picture). If you have windows where you are not concerned about evening privacy and want to use a roller shade instead of blinds, then absolutely you can use a roller shade.
Daytime Privacy Yes
Evening Privacy No
Our Austin TX retractable solar shades do not offer great evening patio privacy
Our Austin TX retractable sun shades for the patio offer outstanding daytime privacy.
Question : What's the difference between the patio roll screens and your commercial grade roller shades for windows? & Answer : Our patio roll shade screens have tie downs and they have exterior grade stainless steel pull chains and heavy duty exterior grade Rollease clutches with up to a 56LB pull rating, whereby when we make commercial grade roll shades for interior use, as commercial shades for windows, they do not need nor have these exterior grade components, therefore the cost to you is less. We can manufacture our Austin commercial window shades using either the plastic pull chains or stainless steel pull chains. The plastic pull chains work just fine for our commercial solar window shades, however for heavy use, heavy-handed use, we recommend using the stainless steel pull chains.
Question : Can I leave a patio roller shade screen in the down position all the time? Do I need to roll the patio roller shade up when I am not using it? & Answer : You absolutely need to roll the outdoor patio shades up when you are not using them. Wind is very powerful, and you don't want all of that fabric to act as a powerful sail in the wind, as doing so will put A LOT of pulling pressure on your tie downs and where the fabric is adhered to the roll tube and most importantly on the gears of the clutch. Our patio sun shades can absolutely withstand wind, don't get me wrong as all our outdoor patio shades are built very well and very sturdy, but wind is EXTREMELY powerful when you take in consideration the large area of fabric from when the outdoor shades are in the down position. It's best to roll your patio sun shades up when it gets windy and always make a practice of rolling your Austin outdoor shades up when they are not needed. Patio sun shades are meant to be used for when you need them, to roll down when they are needed, and rolled back up when they are not. The purpose of our outdoor patio shades Austin TX product is to give you temporary shade when you need / want it. For a permanent shading solution, one that you can leave down all the time, I would recommend the motorized zippertrack roller shade solutions. These are considerably higher priced, around 10X the cost, but they are meant to be used in windy situations to be left down all the time if needed.
Question : What keeps the patio roller shade screen from blowing around in the wind. Is there a way to tie the patio roller shade screen down to keep it from blowing around in the wind? & Answer : Yes, the clutch mechanism on our outdoor roller shades will not allow themselves to be unwound on their own, so no additional fabric will ever be let off the roll unless done so by pulling on the chain by hand. The bottom of our patio sun shades tie down using a ball bungee cord and hooks screwed into the wall.
Question : Is there a way to clean your Austin outdoor roller shades? & Answer :Yes, the fabric for our porch shades is very heavy duty. For a gentle mild cleaning, when the fabric is not all that dirty, you can clean the roll shade fabric while in the down position by hand using a cloth and mild cleaner like simple green. Or you can hire one of our window washers that can do it for you professionally, maybe even while you are getting your windows washed to get a better price. When I clean the roll shades, I take them down and open them in the full open position and I scrub them with simple green, then I use a pressure washer for a final clean. Our outdoor patio shades can be by all means cleaned while installed in the down position, just be smart about it and not apply too much pressure resulting in pulling on the clutch while cleaning them.
Question : Can I purchase and install the patio roller screens or commercial roller shades to self install? Do you ship them? If I want to save on the patio shade screen installation cost, do you have DIY instructions? & Answer :While we do not ship our roller shades, we do have a pickup facility located in Austin TX at 183/Burnet Rd in North Austin that is available for 24/7 pickups. To order any of our roll shade screens as a DIY or Contractor, go to our HobbsScreens.com website and under our Roller Shade Screens section you will see our roller shade screens listed as Exterior Patio Roll Shade Screens and Interior Commercial Grade Roll Shade Screens.
To see how EASY it is to install our Outdoor Roll Up Shades or Interior Office Window Shades, please watch the following video that explains how to measure and how to install Roll-Up Shades.
Question : I would like your Austin patio roller shades to be the same color as the solar window screens you install for us, can you do this? Can you make the patio sun shades out of the same fabric / color that you are making our solar window screens out of?
& Answer :Absolutely, we can match the color of the solar window screens we put up for you. We can make our solar window screens and our exterior sun shades for patios out of the same fabric, so they will be identical. With that said, I recommend that you use the 97% shade fabric for the roller shades, as that difference in shading from the 90% we make our solar window screens out of to the 97% we make our outdoor patio blinds out of is a 70% increase in shade. I very much recommend making your outdoor patio roller shades out of the 97% fabric versus the 90%.
Question : What is your warranty for your roll up patio shades? & Answer : We on-site warrant our roll up patio shades and installation for 90 Days (3 Months). We do not warrant personal damage or neglect resulting in wind damage from leaving the roll up patio shades down during a wind storm that causes damage to it. Remember, our very sturdy Austin outdoor patio shades are meant to be temporarily rolled down when you need them and then back up when you do not, they are a means of temporary shade and are volatile to wind. Personal damage that I have seen from people using our patio blinds usually results from the user pulling on the chain forcefully when the outdoor roller shade is still tied down, thus stripping the interior gears of the clutch. Or forcefully pulling the wrong way on the chain thinking the roller shade is not moving so they need to pull harder and harder, also resulting in the stripping of the gears of the clutch. This takes A LOT of force from the user, but never the less it still happens. All of our outdoor porch roll up blinds have ball stops on the chain to keep them from being rolled too far down, they will stop once they have reached their down position and then stop when they reach the up position. What I have also seen in form of personal damage is that the user will try to roll the outdoor sun shades up, but they will pull the wrong direction hard and forcefully thinking the shade is just stuck or something, thus stripping the gears inside the clutch. I council with the customers for all of our outdoor patio shade installations to not ever try to force rolling the roller shades up or down. If they are pulling on the chain and the shade is not moving, they are doing something wrong like pulling in the wrong direction, or are trying to pull the ball stop through the clutch, or the outdoor roll shade is still tied down (this is the most common). The answer is to not forcefully pull, stop and evaluate what you are doing and make a correction. These are all personal damage situations, not warranty from JoshHobbs.com, and when they occur, there is a repair cost to fix / repair the damage. Our trip rates are $150 plus materials. Additionally, while our outdoor solar shades are very durable, you do not want to leave them down when you are not outdoors on the patio using them. The wind will push and push and push on the fabric of the solar shade, thus will pull and pull and pull on the gears within the clutch. This will ultimately strip those clutch gears. I say all this because I want you to get a product installed that will last and last, which these will, but they do require proper use to avoid non-warranty personal damage. If you are looking for every day shade for your patio windows, something to provide you with constant shade, what you will need are our solar window screens. These will shade your windows constantly, then you can use our outdoor patio shades for temporary shade when you are outdoors on the patio.
Question : I see that the Height (length) of your roll shades is 85", but to the ground is 96", can you make them longer? How long should my sun shades for the patio be? Do I need my retractable patio screens to go all the way to the ground? Can my back patio sun shades drop behind my metal hand railing? & Answer : Patio roller shades do not need to drop further than 85". Generally for patio roll shades, we just take them down to a height not to exceed the patio railing as seen by the following two pictures. A 85" length roll shade will be installed, but we will install a stop on the roller shade so that it drops to the desired length, then stops. We install these stops on site when we install the roller shade. A great resource to take a look at our outdoor roller solar shades is to visit our outdoor / indoor commercial Roller Shade Pictures Pg1 and Roller Shade Pictures Pg2 page found here. We can drop the back patio sun shades in front pr behind your metal hand rail. When we dos this, we will add rubber bumpers to the solar patio shades so that when they blow around from the wind, the aluminum bottom rail doeas not clank when this bottom rail taps against the metal hand rail.
